Is there a way to have two separate default avatars for males and females that would appear upon the user picking their gender during registration?

Unfortunately, this feature is not available with BuddyPress and to our knowledge, there is no plugin that you could install to add this feature to your website. We think that this feature requires custom development work. If you wish to know more about how to do this, feel free to give a look to this tutorial:

Sorry for the delay. We’re experiencing a much larger number of requests than usual so our wait times are longer than expected.
The default size of an avatar is 350×400 and 140×160 for its miniature.
