which widget area is required, and from where did I get those widgets

We are currently expanding our official documentation. We are really sorry if this point is not yet present.
As a quick explanation, you can download the Author Avatars List plugin and our compatibility plugin : Grimlock for Author Avatars.
After installing and activating these two plugins, you will be able to create members lists with the “Grimlock Author Avatars Section” widget. The settings are nearly the same as for our other widget (General/Layout/Style).
