When cropping an image in the avatar and header upload for profiles the image is not shown and the crop box is typically hidden on the top left inside the container it’s in.

Do you by any chance have some picture lazy loading activated? For instance, Jetpack’s lazy loading options is known for causing trouble with BuddyPress cropping.
In that case, you could simply disable lazy loading from your Jetpack settings and your issue should be solved.
If you want to improve your page loading times, we recommend you to consider WP Rocket (https://wp-rocket.me/) as a caching solution. This is the solution we use to improve our demo performances. You can activate image lazy loading and yet exclude specific pages, like the user profile.
