I have the membership plugin restricting access to the whole site is the aim but the dashboard appears regardless of it being set to member only – can you please tell me how to stop that happening?

Which membership plugin do you currently use? It should be fine as the dashboard page is a standard page displaying WordPress widgets.
Also, please make sure to log out or use the private navigation feature from your browser to test your membership website as these privacy settings might not apply to you as admin.If this issue is related with Paid Memberships Pro, you could also try to reach the plugin authors as they will be more informed and might be better suited to help you.
