    Hello,

When a user attempts to upload a new avatar image on a mobile device, they get a warning message (see attached screenshot). This message appears regardless of the photo size the user attempts to upload, even if it’s well above the recommended size outlined in the warning message. If the user then proceeds to upload the photo, it’s significantly compressed and appears fuzzy on their profile.

However, if the user was to upload the exact same file as their cover image, none of the above issues occur, and the image is shown in perfect quality.

You can see this issue on the Gwangi demo site too, when using a mobile device: https://dating.gwangi-theme.com/

    Thanks.

    Hi Nifty,

Unfortunately, this issue is related with BuddyPress, it’s best if you try to reach the plugin authors. They will be more informed and better suited to help you.

However, please be aware that we addressed this issue in another topic. Don’t hesitate to tell us if the snippet in this topic helped you fix this.

Uploaded avatar size from mobile view = poor quality

To go further, we invite you to post your request on their support forums: buddypress.org/support

We remain available for all support requests related with the use of your theme.

    Hi Manathan,

We don’t believe that it’s a BuddyPress issue, as the issue doesn’t occur when a default theme is used (we’ve tested on Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Nineteen and Twenty Twenty-One).

We tested the snippet from the link you included, but it doesn’t fix the issue. Instead, it changes the warning message displayed to the user, and causes it to be displayed on both desktop and mobile. This warning message is displayed regardless of the photo size the user attempts to upload.

Can we please have a fix for this?

    Thanks.

    Hello Nifty,

    Sorry for the late reply.

We’ve tried everything we can, but it seems there is no solution. This problem is due to the way BuddyPress handles the cropping of avatars.

This is because at the time of cropping BP reduces the size of the image to fit the width of the screen, which is necessary for the cropping to work properly. As a result, on mobile devices, the image becomes very small to fit the width of the screen, which is why it is blurred when cropping.

The reason why the image size warning doesn’t appear with Twenty Twenty-One and the other tested themes is because on those themes the recommended size for the avatar is 150 x 150, which is much smaller than Gwangi (350 x 400). For this reason, when BuddyPress shrinks the image, it remains larger than 150 x 150. This doesn’t change the problem, it’s just less visible because the avatars are small in these themes.

We found a way to prevent BuddyPress from shrinking the image, but then the image goes out of the container and the crop becomes unusable. Please find the attached screenshot. Unfortunately we can’t solve this issue in CSS, because the crop tool places everything in absolute position and depends on fixed sizes to work.

We’re sorry that no solution can be found. I suggest you to report this to the BuddyPress team. Perhaps they might have a solution we don’t know of.
